The Way Through: Real Stories of Courage, Connection and Change from Around the World

In 2021, April Jefferson and I wanted to help reconnect people. We all wrestled with isolation, but we knew there was possibility. Also, April and I knew from our experience as facilitators that Open Space Technology had the power to amplify connection. Not familiar with OST? See below.

April and I had a hypothesis. The principles of open space could also be seen as a philosophy. To test that hypothesis, we invited people in our combined network to talk to us about examples where open space principles showed up in their life. How did they seek opportunities to learn and contribute, even during a pandemic? What other stories came to mind? How were they prepared to be surprised?

We interviewed over 50 people, collected and currated their stories, and we have the first volume that focuses on stories of personal transformation. We can’t wait to share those stories with you.

Coming in early 2026:

What Is Open Space Technology?

Open Space Technology (OST) is a meeting methodology where participants create and manage their own agenda around a central theme, allowing for participatory, inclusive, and collaborative group dialogue.

Principles and Process

Open Space Technology is defined by its self-organizing structure. Rather than following a rigid, pre-planned schedule, participants identify issues they are passionate about, propose sessions, and join discussions that interest them. There are four key principles:
• Whenever it starts is the right time.
• When it’s over, it’s over.
• Whatever happens, happens.
• The “Law of Two Feet”: If participants are not learning or contributing, they are encouraged to move to another session or reflect.
